Cabrera Archipelago National Park

Cabrera offers a different kind of Mallorca day: one organised around a protected archipelago, a sea crossing and time on foot, rather than a resort promenade. The national park protects marine habitats as well as islands, making the water part of the destination rather than simply the way to reach it. A visit rewards travellers who want to notice the relationship between a small island community, its wildlife and the sea.

Great for

Cabrera Gran is the island opened to visitors. Its harbour, tracks and historical remains give a day ashore several possible directions, but this is a place to choose a permitted walk and follow the park's arrangements. The limits on movement help explain why the landscape feels different from a developed holiday coast.

Look beneath the surface

Posidonia meadows are among the park's defining habitats. Posidonia is a flowering marine plant, not seaweed, and its underwater structure supports a wide range of life. Rocky seabeds add caves, crevices and shelter for fish and invertebrates. Understanding that variety makes even a simple look into the water more interesting; it also explains why protecting the seabed matters.

Snorkelling belongs in the designated bathing areas and within your ability. It is an opportunity to observe rather than collect, feed or disturb marine life. A boat excursion and a diving trip are different experiences with different arrangements.

A landscape with a human past

Cabrera's history complicates the impression of an untouched island. Archaeological remains record older uses, while the museum in the former winery explores the relationship between people and limited island resources. The story includes the French prisoners held here during the Napoleonic period, a difficult chapter that gives the historical walk particular weight.

The harbour castle is an arresting part of that story, but its building is currently closed for safety reasons. Plan the visit around the routes and facilities that are open, rather than treating every visible landmark as an interior attraction.

Give the island a whole day

The most satisfying visit leaves time to walk, look and understand what is protected. Choose an authorised excursion with a clear return arrangement, bring what you need for the day and resist packing several ambitious walks into the hours ashore. Cabrera's appeal is the chance to pay closer attention to a place whose ecology and history are inseparable.
